James A Garfield Papers

The Garfield Papers include many interesting letters, and working on them has - to me - been like taking a comprehensive postbellum history course! Garfield was truly a Renaissance Man, and his untimely death was a great loss to the country.

The “cool find” I came across is a four-page letter from James G Blaine, which starts off with the note “Stricly Confidential - Burn After Reading”. It provides an example of political intrigue and the major players of the time. Here’s the link for the first page: https://www.loc.gov/resource/mss21956.mss21956-034_0014_0593/?sp=176

Very interesting. I am also working in Garfield.

I came across this letter from John Church Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton’s son to James Garfield in 1870 which excited me. On the second page it appears to be initialed A. H. which if correct could be Alexander Hamilton, Jr. although the handwriting on both pages is the same so I am a little confused. John C. Hamilton did have a son named Schuyler so I am sure this is correct especially with the reference to his father taking over Treasury. Cool stuff.
