In the Early American Sheet Music campaign, some sheet music use “calando”, which typically instructs the musician to decrease in both volume and tempo. However, this creates confusion as the campaign tips instruct you to transcribe tempo markings but not dynamic (volume) markings, even though calando can technically be both. So should calando be transcribed or not? Thanks!

Great question! I sent your note to our Music Division collection specialist and she advised that since “calando” involves tempo that you should transcribe it. Let us know if you have any other questions as you dig into Early American Sheet Music. We’re here for all the questions ![]()
