Library of Congress Comment and Posting Policy

We welcome your participation and comments on the Library’s blogs and social media and in our webinars and online forums. Our online sites are governed by the general rules of respectful civil discourse. Please treat these forums with respect so that may be a shared community resource where people are able to engage in ongoing conversations related to the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress does not discriminate against any views. Nevertheless, the Library monitors user-generated content and reserves the right to remove content that violates the rules below. Here are the rules:

  • Do not engage in name-calling. We will remove content that contains abusive, obscene, racist, threatening or harassing content, personal attacks of any kind, offensive terms that target specific individuals or groups, or sexually explicit material.

  • We will remove spam and content that promotes services or products, or that involves political campaigning or lobbying. You may include links to products and services that aid in the discussion at hand.

  • We will remove content that contains non-public personal information (whether your own or someone else’s), including Social Security numbers, home address, home or cell phone number, or personal e-mail address, in order to protect privacy.

  • Gratuitous links to sites and repeat submissions of the same (or very similar) contributions are viewed as spam and may result in the content being removed.

  • Do not post anything that you do not have the right to post or include links to material that infringes on someone else’s copyright. We follow the notice and takedown procedure for complaints of copyright violation under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

  • Participants must be over 13 years of age. If a comment contains information about a person – such as their age or grade in school – that indicates the poster is likely to be under 13 years old, the comment will be removed.

  • Communications made through social media posts, e-mail, webinars, and messaging systems do not constitute a legal or official notice or comment to the Library of Congress or any official or employee of the Library for any purpose. Please see the Library’s regulations for additional information.

  • Repeated violations of these rules will result in the user being blocked.

  • Comments are for discussing the article or event that has been shared, not for customer support. If you are looking for customer support, please see our Ask a Librarian page.

Thank you for joining the conversation!
