It is a list of names. Would it be more readable to list the names as they appear in the column going down, or continue transcribing the four column names across.

I would have transcribed column 1, column 2, etc.

I agree with your approach and would disregard the columns when transcribing these names. We suggest preserving a table/column/row format only when the data in the rows has a meaningful relationship. On this page, the data has no relation across rows, it’s basically one long list of names so you can transcribe it as such.

i am still not clear on how this should be transcribed. the 2nd, 3rd and 4th columns are unevenly spaced out because the transcriber transcribed the name to correspond with the name in the first column; i am guessing to denote that there are columns. can someone show an example on how this should be transcribed.

Interesting. I typically break them up into blocks/columns, as they seem more legible that way. For example: How would you know if:

“WILLIAM. H. TRUESDALE RODMAN WANAMAKER S. DAVIES WARFIELD BENJAMIN IDE WHEELER”

was A:

WILLIAM. H. TRUESDALE

RODMAN WANAMAKER

S. DAVIES WARFIELD

BENJAMIN IDE WHEELER

or B:

WILLIAM. H. TRUESDALE RODMAN

WANAMAKER S. DAVIES

WARFIELD BENJAMIN

IDE WHEELER
