why are transcribers including extra brackets and asterisks? Are they noting that it is “handwritten”.

Hi, Anne. This comes from the Transcription guide: Unusual Text: Text in margins. If a person after the original writer added info, personal notes, or really anything not in the original text as published, then you use [* *] around the added notes or material. Hope this helps!
